Ullambana Festival: A Recap of Our Gratitude Ceremony

A Night of Light and Liberation
Last month, over 200 practitioners and families gathered at Lotus Light Monastery for our annual Ullambana Festival. The courtyard was lit with hundreds of butter lamps, their flames reflecting the deep vows of gratitude and liberation offered by all who attended.
Ven. Karma Wangmo led the bardo liberation rites, reading the names of 87 deceased relatives submitted by attendees. The shared vegetarian feast that followed was a joyful expression of community and the spirit of giving.
Reflections on Gratitude
The Ullambana festival originates in the story of Maudgalyayana, who, through his practice and the collective merit of the sangha, freed his mother from the realm of suffering. It reminds us that our liberation is not a solitary achievement — it is woven from the threads of relationship, gratitude, and collective practice.
