Notes on the Heart Sutra Study Group

Form Is Emptiness; Emptiness Is Form
Our monthly Heart Sutra study group has been exploring one of the most celebrated and condensed expressions of Prajnaparamita — the Perfection of Wisdom. Each session, participants bring their questions, insights, and confusions to a shared inquiry guided by our resident teacher.
Key Themes from Recent Sessions
- "Form is emptiness" — understanding that phenomena lack inherent existence
- "Emptiness is form" — understanding that emptiness is not a void but the very ground of manifestation
- The Five Aggregates (skandhas) and how the self is assembled and dis-assembled in each moment
- The Heart Sutra as a "mantra text" — the final lines as a direct pointing beyond conceptual mind
The next session will focus on the closing mantra: Gate gate pāragate pārasaṃgate bodhi svāhā — "Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone completely beyond — awakening!"
All are welcome to join this study group, whether you are new to the text or have studied it for years. Notes and audio recordings are available from the library upon request.
